A Big Old Catch Up!

Hello Dears,

How are you? It’s been a while, I’m sorry. I think the lack of posting over the summer reflects what a super busy time we have had of late! But now it’s time to catch up on what’s been going on. It feels strange to still be feeling quite summery at the end of October, but summer never really ended down our neck of the woods. Although the nights have been drawing in, we have been fortunate enough to still have more than our fair share of glorious sunshine most weeks and we haven’t stopped playing since.

Over the ‘actual’ summer months, we were lucky enough to be pretty gigged up with an array of different events. Stretching our memories all the way back to July, we started the season playing at a wonderful Birthday party in the most beautiful English Country Garden in Beaminster. We are country girls at heart and to be playing in such surroundings was a real treat.

At the end of July our sessions at The Portland Port began. We were to sit on the side of the dock and play to the passengers re-boarding their ship after a day out on the south coast and then play them off as they left. It was quite a surreal experience sitting right next to some of the biggest cruise liners in Europe, some ships were so high up that the passengers looked tiny waving at us from their balconies. We always got such a warm reception though, our music must’ve carried well as we got lots of them singing along and dancing. A few amusing highlights that we will remember include; the engine crew opening their side door to do a call and response sing and dance with us to Tina Turner’s ‘Proud Mary’; being honked at by the ships captain with the line ‘Baby you can drive my ship!’ (having just done our version of the Beatles ‘Drive my Car’); playing from inside an upturned shipping container when the weather was bad and jumping out of our skins every time the Nothe Artillery let off their canon as the ships left. We had so much fun, we hope to be back again next year!

Throughout the summer months, we played a number of great pub gigs in Weymouth at the Royal Oak on the harbour side and at Boho in town. We love playing both of these places, they have such friendly staff and customers and such a relaxed happy vibe. We were also lucky enough to have local drummer and all round hitter of objects David Hackett sit in with us on his Cajon a few times. We always enjoy mixing it up a bit and love playing with other musicians so this was a real treat. We look forward to more gigs at both places over the following winter months and perhaps more collaborations with who knows….?!

A massive highlight in August for us was playing at the brand new Forever Sun Festival in Dorchester. Although this was the only weekend of the summer is really rained, it did not put anyone off. It was a fantastic weekend of music put together by some great people, who ensured that there was a good selection of local talent on the bill as well as many well known acts. Our slot took place early on the Friday in the Curiosity Lounge, we had a good response and it was great chatting to the people who came up to us at various points over the weekend to say how much they enjoyed it.

At the end of August, we took ourselves off on a mini road trip to Brighton where we were booked to play a wedding. We travelled up the day before so we could enjoy a day/night there. We had such an amazing time exploring the vintage shops, record shops and music shops, as well as taking in the pier, some chips and doughnuts (anyone would think we’d never been to the seaside before?!) Finally topping off the night by finding the most excellent swing DJ – playing dance music from the 1920’s to the 1950’s – including so many of our favourites records! The wedding the next afternoon was a real treat too, set just outside of the city in a beautiful countryside barn. We really do get to visit some gorgeous places on our ukulele travels.

The first weekend in September started with two gigs at Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage in Axminster. We loved this gig last year and were so happy to be invited back for both days of the Autumn Fair this year. The weather held out for the most part and everyone enjoyed the days activities and the definitely the food!

Mid September there was a very special gig for us when we played at my sisters wedding. We played her down the aisle (managing not to cry!) and during the signing of the register. It was such a wonderful day for all concerned and I felt honoured to be able to play the music for my beautiful big sisters big day.

At the end of September we played and did a workshop at a big Community Family Fun Day put on by Stacey’s dad for the Baptist Church in celebration of their anniversary. We love to be involved with our local community and there was such a spectacular turn out, we hope they make it an annual event and invite us back again!

So here we are at last to October. With already a few gigs under our belts this month and another three to come this weekend, we show no sign in slowing down just yet! Our first gig tomorrow morning is at a ‘Pretty Nostalgic Magazine’ gathering taking place in Bristol. We are super excited about this one, it’s always lovely to meet other vintage minded folk and with a day packed full of vintage entertainment, food, shopping and talks – what more could we want? Take a look at the event and our write up here:

Then finally Sunday night we are back at Boho in Weymouth again, from 5-7pm. Please do come and join us, we’d love to see you all there!

I promise the next post will be sooner (and shorter!) We are already getting excited about the lead up to Christmas! If you want us to play at your venue or your event do get in touch.

With love for now,

L x

Perks of the job….

Hello again you beautiful ukulele fans,

The sunshine has been out and we have been making the most of our new gaff on the beach! It is also the perfect weather to enjoy the joyful sounds of the uke, hailing from sunny Hawaii it is meant to be enjoyed in the sun, near the beach which is EXACTLY what we have been doing although I think we generally look a bit happier about it than these gals…..

Our job takes us to all sorts of weird and wonderful places and this month we had the pleasure of playing at a beautiful wedding at Bristol Zoo. As well as having the honour of being part of so many stunning, special days we often end up with all sorts of other perks, our most recent one being “out of hours” access to the Zoo! We got to wonder around a closed, crowd-less zoo and see the animal’s in a more relaxed state…..a lovely day out as well as a fab gig!

If you are a regular visitor you may notice our new & improved swanky header at the top of this page. It has been designed by a fan of ours who took it upon himself to update our previous picture and make it more inkeeping with our style & we think he has done a bloomin’ marvelous job and couldn’t be happier 🙂 Cheers Kev!!

Our next outing is another fab opportunity to spread our music far and wide at the Portland Port….we will be playing for cruise-liner passengers as they board the boat ready to hit the high seas….we’ll let you know how our sea-legs fair 😉

So long me hearties….until next time,

Stacey xx

‘Til There Was Shoes

‘Oh we do like to be beside the seaside!’

Dear Friends,

It’s been a busy old time at TTWU headquarters (what’s new?!) Stacey has been away and back and away again for training in her super new job. She has been chosen to be South Dorset’s new Rock Choir leader. If you haven’t heard of Rock Choir you should check it out here: http://rockchoir.com/ It is a fantastic organisation, dedicated to providing an uplifting and enjoyable musical choir experience for ALL. Whether you can sing or not, this is the place for you if you love music and love having a good time. Stacey will be leading 6 choirs in and around Weymouth, Dorchester, Bridport and Poole. You can sign up for a FREE taster session now, which takes place in July. Here you will get to see what it’s all about and meet other people as well as see our wonderful Stacey in action!

We have also moved house this month, into a beautiful flat over looking the sea. We feel incredibly lucky and have already had our first TTWU beach rehearsal:

Alongside all of this excitement we’ve been lucky enough to play at a couple of beautiful weddings, one of which the weather was so nice for they were able to hold the whole thing outside! This has been topped off with a couple of excellent sunny harbour side gigs, including our first Quay Fest slot which we loved. Happy days indeed.

We have updated our gig list here on the blog, with more to come. But to keep you entertained for now, check out the next video post. It is a video for a new local shoe designer who requested our aural services for the soundtrack, so we wrote and recorded this little ditty, let us know what you think!

With Love,

Lucy

Fisherman’s Friends

We had an excellent gig on Saturday night at The Royal Oak on the harbourside. Cosied up next to the old piano we played for a couple of hours, entertaining local fishermen and holiday makers alike and by the second half we had everyone clapping and singing along. After two encores we were ready to call it a night, but we are very much looking forward to our next booking there on Sunday 9th June. It’s an afternoon slot so we’re hoping the sun will be shining and everyone will come and join us for a couple of jars and celebrate the beginning of summer!

summer blog

This weekend we are looking forward to playing at a pre-wedding reception in Somerset before taking the rest of the bank holiday weekend off to enjoy watching some of our friends play in a number of local music events. Our home town of Weymouth has a great live music scene which we really love being involved with and supporting.

Argy Bargy

Hello Friends,

Exciting new developments have been taking place over the Easter holidays. Along with some like minded musician friends, we have set up our own teaching and rehearsal studio! ‘The Barge’ music studio is situated in our sunny home town of Weymouth, but a five minute stroll from the seafront. A range of lessons and workshops are available, including piano, drums, flute, ukulele and singing lessons. Workshops include drum circles, band coaching, uke troupes and theory groups. We have been rehearsing regularly and love the acoustics and the dedicated musical space. We will be uploading some new videos soon, all filmed at ‘The Barge’ so you can take a sneak peak! The website is currently under construction, but you can like find out more on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/messages/818500600#!/TheBargeMusicStudio

The Barge Logo JPEGIn other TTWU news, we have been continuing to enjoy playing at various wedding fairs. We played the Werid Wonderful World of Weddings fair in Bristol last weekend, in the @Bristol science museum. We entertained and chatted to lots of lovely bride and grooms to be, all of whom were looking for something a little different for their big day. In between sets we were able to explore (and play with) lots of the amazing scientific installations. We have some ridiculous pictures to follow, but my favourite moments included looking around the Aardman Wallace and Gromit exhibition and watching Stacey take a run in a giant hamster wheel! Much fun!

Last bit of important news – have a gig on Saturday night at the Royal Oak on the harbourside, starting from about 9pm- we hope to see plenty of you there. We can’t wait! xx

Wonderful World of Weddings

Yesterday we had the pleasure of attending The Dorset Wedding Festival in Holton Lee. The whole set up was stunning and we had a fantastic day.

There were lots of gorgeous cakes, dresses, classic cars and campers that were sure to set the creative wedding juices flowing.

A lovely day out...

A lovely day out…

We had some great chats with Brides & Grooms- To- Be and if you did have a chat with us or take our contact details please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us, we are always available to answer questions 🙂

We also made the most of the much needed sunshine on Saturday by heading down to Bridport Market and mooching around the vintage antique fairs and of course partaking in some tea drinking and cake eating! 😉

Spring is a comin’ (pleeaasse?!)

Hello Loves,

We have the feelings of spring in our bones, exciting times a comin’, new adventures to be had and lots of weddings and gigs lined up. If only the weather would agree with us! We love a bit of snow as much as the next, but we really do feel ready for a bit of spring warmth and sunshine. We have been reminiscing about the Olympics, the busking, the festivals and the many gigs we played last year, we are craving flip-flops, brown freckly noses and playing our music outdoors again. The summer of 2012 really was epic for TTWU and 2013 is shaping up to be just as fun packed!Daffs

Earlier this month we auditioned for the Portland Port Cruise liners, to play for the passengers as they return from their on land adventures and re-board the ships. We’re very excited to say that we got the gig and we will be spending a good part of our summer months ahoying and celebrating all things nautical TTWU style (meaning we’ll be learning  a few sea shanties and getting our best vintage stripes on!)

TTWU auditionGlammed up and ready for our audition.

In other news, we played at a gorgeous vintage wedding fair at Bristol Zoo last week and what a beautiful day it was. So many amazing exhibitors showing off their remarkable skills, so many excited brides with their friends and families; we loved being a part of it. We played on and off all morning and got chatting to many who loved the vintage tones and the variety of our music. We are very much looking forward to each and every one of the weddings that we have been booked for and here’s cheers to the next fair.

TTWU zooEnjoying a quick look around the Zoo in between songs – we’d make cute Red Pandas!

We will be updating our gig list soon and uploading some new videos, so keep your eyes about you for plenty of TTWU action in the coming months.

With Love xx
